Another Dusk to Dawn is in the "done" column.

18 finishers.

Cloudy and light winds in the morning and hot in the afternoon.

We drank plenty of water and other sports drinks throughout the day.

Dennis sagged again this year and everyone appreciated having him around.

Dan Gaz made the trip up with us and had a solid day in the saddle.

Chef Tim met us in Pine Island and made the trip back to his house.

Ted's in-laws did another terrific job with lunch at Wabasha.

I ate and drank all day and felt great all day.

Always a good time regardless of how you feel.

2013 Dan Ulwelling Freedom Fest Race

I ventured out on Saturday to meet up with Silver and the guys for the annual Freedom Fest race.

25 miles of mostly flat road with fast speeds and normally hot and windy conditions.

This year was no exception.

We headed north with a brisk tailwind and pace was high from the start.

A couple of guys tried to break away, but the main group just let them get so far before they realized they were not going to leave us behind. We turned west to Lansing and the group finally started to break up a bit with the crosswinds. By the time we turned north again, we were down to 20 or so in the lead group.

As we neared the next corner (and prepared for more cross winds), I decided to give it a go.  I broke off the front and took the corner at speed to give myself a nice 100 yard lead.  I put my head down and tried to keep a high tempo.  After several miles, the group rolled up to me.  It appeared we were down a few more riders.

As we turned south and into a headwind, we had about 12 riders in the lead group and we were increasing the distance back to the next chase group.

We kept the speed up by getting into a nice rotation (even if only half our group did the work).

As we turned south on the final home stretch, several guys started playing the "I'm not going to go first" game.  So again, I decided I would press the issue.  I took off with my head down and decided I was going to pull all the way to the end.

About 500 yards to go the group went around me and within a few second the sprint began.  I dug deep to stay on the back and as we neared the finish several riders sat up and I went by them to finish in the top 10 (actually 7th, I think).

Silver Cycling was well repressented (even if we didn't win the overall trophy): Silver took 1st in the 60+, Legs 1st in 50-59, Espresso 2nd in 50-59, me 3rd in 50-59, SeaRay got 2nd in the 40-49 group, and Andy was 3rd in the 40-49 division.

Afterward, we hung out under a nice shade tree with cold beer.  Even the guys from Rochester (Steve, James, and Lew) and Flanders (Jay W.) came over to share a beer.  So everyone in the final group was sitting around cooling off and having some fun conversations.

Great time!

Dr. Tim called a morning ride so I made the trip down to Dunn Brothers.

There were about 6 or 7 riders and we were waiting on a couple more that had confirmed they would be there when Steve rolled in.

We headed to Byron, then north to Pine Island.

After a quick stop for water and food at Kwik Trip, we headed to Mazeppa, then east and south on Cty 7.

Most of the group heading back to Oronoco, but Steve wanted more miles and I didn't have big plans for the day (until later), so the two of us continued on to Hwy 63, then east to Hammond and Millville.

Up out of the river valley to Elgin for another water stop, then it was back to Rochester on the quiet back roads.

I pulled off as Steve headed south around Rochester to round out his mileage around 100 miles.

I finished with 82 miles.

It was great to catch up with Steve and I needed the longer miles.

Next time we need to get Jeff out there with us.

The Three Amigos will ride again.

Unexpected Hundo

Silver called out for an "unexpected hundo".

Starting from Cannon Falls, we headed east through some quiet rolling country roads to Red Wing.
Then after a quick stop, we continued east and south to Lake City.  Again the roads were quiet and fun.

After another quick stop, we headed up hwy 61 to Old Frontenac and we made a side trip to the top of the bluffs at the state park.  From there it was back to quiet roads to Red Wing.

Once we got back into Red Wing, we made another detour up to Memorial Park and then back down to a Kwik Trip for some food and water.

Once more onto the quiet back roads to Cannon Falls and then a nice rest at the Mill St Tavern for a cold beer.

Then it was time to head home.

101 hilly miles on a beautiful day with great friends.

Thanks, Steve, Ted, Dave, and Kevin.  Let's do it again real soon!

Monday group ride

Probably one of the best nights for riding I've seen this year (except for Arizona).

I rode in to the Monday group ride from Bamber Valley School.  It was a nice sized group of about 20 riders in the fast group, as we left.

I noticed some familar faces were there:  Eric, Bruce, Charlie, Mark, and Big Jim.

We headed SE out of town toward Simpson, then continued south to Hwy 30, then west to Stewartville and more west.  Some guys turned at High Forest and headed back, but about 7 or 8 of us continued west and then north into Rock Dell and eventually Salem Corners.  From there we headed back into town and I headed for home.

I finished with 60 fast miles and some fun memories.

Missed out on a great riding opportunity with Silver and few others out of Cannon Falls, but Ben was in town and I desperately needed to see him.  What a great little guy, we had fun all day long.

We went to John Hardy's for Justin's birthday and when Ben, Mommy, and Daddy got up to leave, Ben looked at me and started to cry.  I guess he didn't want to go yet.  So, I got up and rode home with him in their car.  He was much happier.

By the time they headed for Mankato, Ben was pretty tired so I think he was ready for a nice nap in the car.  Bill said they ran into a lot of rain by Owatonna, but it didn't last too long.

Anyway, I've gotten in a couple of 25 mile rides and a few indoor rides.

Yardwork prevented me from getting out with the group on Monday.  I really would like to make the Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday rides this year.  So far only a couple of Mondays have worked out.  But there is a lot of summer riding left.

I feel good and the Arizona miles really helped me get in shape and the two week cruise helped my tan.

Saturday I went up to Lakeville and helped with the first installment of the Farm Dog TT with the Silver guys.  First round was windy and cold, the second round was windy, cold, and snowy.  Kudos for everyone that rode (and worked).

Sunday, Kathy, Marie, and I went up to the Mall of America for a Cancer Walk/Run.  The run was outdoors and we saw a lot of people as we made our way into the Mall.  They say they get around 50,000 runners for the event.  Not as many walkers, but it was warm and no so windy indoors.  Afterward we went for some lunch, then home to go visit the mothers on Mother's Day.

Yesterday, I made it to the Bamber Valley School again to ride with the Monday group.  The faster group split almost immediately from the rest of the riders as we left the school and I was back a bit, so I had to play catch up.

We headed east and south out of town to Simpson, then west and south to Stewartville.  We continued west through High Forrest until we got to cty 3, then north to Rock Dell and on into Salem Corners.  And finally, east to Rochester.

I started to feel some cramping in my ham strings as we hit the final climbs back into Rochester, so I backed off and spun a bit until they felt better.  I felt pretty good all the way home and I'm glad I didn't need to push it.

I finished with 58 mile including my ride in and home.

I definately need more of those type of rides.

I rode with the Monday night group ride from Bamber Valley School.

It was the first time I've ridden with this group in several years.

They split into several groups from the get-go.
I lucked out and got into the correct group, though.

We headed SE across town, then out past the Gun Club and on to Eyota.
Then north on 42 until we got to Viola.
From there it was west and south back to Cty 9.

I peeled off and headed for home and finished with 42 fast miles.

On Tuesday, I got out for a quick 25 miles by myself.
I needed to stretch my legs a bit after the Monday workout.

Mostly Indoors

That describes the spring riding so far.

Oh sure I've made it outside for a few miles, but nothing of any length or duration.

Kathy and I are heading for a two week cruise, so the weather will be better but my bike will continue to gather dust.  I do hope to get some indoor miles on the cruise ship.  Mostly to not lose any conditioning (if you can call my condition "condition")...

Temps hit 40, so I got out for a nice spin after work.

Light winds made the ride even more fun, as I did my old stand by out and back.

It feels great to be on a real bike without tons of layers on...

Bring on the Global Warming!

I tagged along with Steve, Rob, Shad, Pete, and Ted as they attempted the 80+ mile gravel race/ride from Lakeville to Faribault and back to Lakeville.

The roads were pretty frozen over with lots of ice and quite a few spots of recent re-freeze (both water and muddy ruts).

The racers were long gone before I even got warmed, but I was there to just ride it anyway.

It was a nice course that took us out through some great countryside.

As the temps warmed a bit, so did the roads in spots, so things started to get tacky and even a bit muddy.

Then while trying to navigate some very deep frozen ruts, I lost my balance and ended up on my side.

Nothing hurt too bad, so I picked myself up and rode on.

After awhile I noticed my left knee was starting to hurt, so I was sure I lost some skin.
As we rode on, I felt things starting to tighten up and I could tell I wasn't riding for fun anymore.

When we got to Faribault, I decided the rest of the ride would be solo and on blacktop.  I could tell the gravel ups and downs were too much for me today.

So I made my way back to Lakeville on the frontage roads following I35.

I was plenty tired when I got to the truck and I finished with almost 75 miles.

Sunday saw the stiffness set in around my left knee, neck and shoulders, and my right thumb seems to have gotten into the mix somewhere as it too was swollen a bit.

But nothing broke (on me or the bike)...

Listen up...

Got back from Arizona on Saturday around 2:30pm.

1700 miles of driving each way or about 27 hours of straight through driving.  But the Suburban made the trip much nicer with an air mattress in the back to take a nice nap every once in awhile.
Rob and Shad made the drive with me, so 1 person could sleep while the other two drove and kept each other awake.

We (Rob) hit some icy stuff on the way down in New Mexico and a little in Arizona, but the drive back was smooth sailing.

Now for the good stuff:

8 days of bike riding in great weather with great friends.

We got down there on Thursday around 1:00pm and couldn't wait to get out on the road.  The temps were in the middle to upper 50s, but the sky was bright blue with no clouds.

Pete showed up later in the day on Thursday, with the rest of the guys flying in on Friday.

We did a number of familar routes and some new ones.

The best new ride was Tortilla Flats.  We drove about 45 minutes to get to a park to launch from.  Brian from Minnesota (who winters down there) met us for the day.  We rolled down into the Tortilla Flats area, then up and over some nice climbs, then down into the valley area of Tortilla Flats (the town, if you can call it a town), we continued up the otherside to the end of the blacktop road.  Then we turned and had a terrific downhill ride all the way into the town again.  From there we continued up and out the otherside back to the cars.

On another day we made the trip to Fountain Hills and back through Scottsdale.

And we even did a 100 mile day.

The temps kept getting warmer each day and the sky was always clear and blue.
We did have one day were the wind made an appearence, but we stayed together and it wasn't too bad.

How can any day riding your bike be bad?

Anyway, I finished the trip with 509 total miles and according to Steve's Garmin we did over 35,000 feet of climbing during the trip (that's like climbing Mount Everest and then some).

It's great to be home, but I already miss the long, warm days riding...

Some Pics:

Day 1: cool, but fun.

End of the road on Mt McDowell Road.

Going fast on Mt McDowell Road.

Warmer riding is ahead

Tomorrow is the big send off.

Rob, Shad, and I head out bright and early (that's the plan) for AZ.
The trailer is all loaded and ready to go.

Silver Cycling should look at replacing the trailer with something just a bit bigger (wider and higher).  Then they could set it up better for bike hauling.  This trailer is just too narrow for bikes to be mounted across the width and it is too short to mount the bikes hanging from the sides.  So, we are stuck with packing them in the center lengthwise and you can only get so many in that way.  If you look at the pro vans, they typically hang the bikes from the walls by the front fork, resulting in much more usable space.  Since we are a bike club, I think we need a trailer that is setup to handle bikes in a more professional manner.  OK, time to get off the soapbox.

The plan is for the three of us to drive straight through to AZ and hopefully we can get down there before noon on Thursday.  We have an air mattress, we are going to setup in the back of the suburban for at least the occasional cat nap.  Of course there will be snacks and a cooler for us.

The plan is to get a nice ride in on Thursday and then a good nights rest for another nice ride on Friday.  Pete will show up later on Thursday, while the rest of the guys should show up on Friday around noon or so.

Then the party really gets going.

I hope to have some photos (that will make you all wish you were along for the fun) to post after I get back.  I plan on being too busy to post anything while I'm down there.

I'm looking forward to a fun time with a great group of guys and some great riding.

Still trying to pile on the miles ahead of next Wednesday.
All of them are indoors as the roads and trails are pretty much skating rinks.
Not much fun.

Rob and I are planning the trailer swap on Sunday, then I'll get my stuff loaded and ready for our planned Wednesday departure.

I still need to clean the CX bike and regrease both bikes, then I should be ready to load them up.

I suppose I should get a suit case out and start laying out stuff for the trip.

Now, I hope the weather cooperates, both for the drive and the riding.

Indoors, indoors, indoors

Like the title says, you can guess where my "riding" is occurring.

Fun times.

I am well behind last year already, but then last year it was probably 50 degree outside.

I will keep working the miles for the Arizona trip.  I would like to have 500 miles in before I go, but we'll see.

The trip is pretty much all set, sounds like Legs and Shad will bring the trailer (full of bikes and gear) down to Rochester, we'll then switch to the Suburban, load my suff and head out from Rochester.  The plan is to drive straight through if the roads are good, otherwise we'll stop along the way to give ourselves a rest.  Hopefully, we can get down there and get all setup before the others show.

Don't tell the others, but we are hoping to even get a ride or two in before they get there... :)

I can't wait, it should be a blast.

On a personal note, Kathy is doing great.  And she and Marie just scheduled our cruise last night, so end of April is the date for some fun in the sun.  Marie and Justin are cruising the first week with us, then they'll fly back while Kathy and I do "one more lap" for a second week in the sun.  Too bad Cathy and Bill can't join us, but with Ben being so little they felt they would have to pass this year.  Maybe next year...or maybe we'll have to start thinking about Disney World and Universal Studios.

On a pro cycling note, too bad about Lance.  If pro cycling is ever going to move forward, they need to stop looking back.  Any 10 year old witch hunts do absolutely nothing good for the current sport.  Sometimes, I really get tired of defending the sport to people who don't follow it or really care about it, but because of Lance the only thing they hear is cheat, cheat, cheat.   Sad.

Start a clean sport today for a better tomorrow.

Jeff, Steve and I got out for a nice spin on the slightly snow covered trail of the Douglas trail tonight.

There were a few thick spots, but more bare or hardpacked spots than anything.

It was fun until my light battery ran out, then I had to finish the ride with a flashligh in my left hand.

And did I mention that I really started to run out of gas by the time we had turned around and headed for the cars.  I'm blaming it on the fact that I'm still not 100% from this flu bug that I had last week.

I'm sure Jeff and Steve will just say I'm a wuss...

Still, it was fun to get out and ride.  I need to start piling on the miles so I have fun in Arizona.
