Didn't win the Powerball and the Mayan calendar is broke, I guess that means I need to keep working...

On the bright side, I do get to ride my bike some more.

Near the end

Well, 2012 is fast coming to a close, not to mention the end of the world on 12/21/2012.

Most of the riding has been indoors with hopes of more outdoor miles to be my New Year's resolution (or wish).

Plans for Arizona 2013 are coming together nicely and I'm really looking forward to the trip.

Also, Kathy and I are planning a nice long cruise to celebrate the end of a trying 2012.  I think she wants to try a two week cruise (or two seperate one week back-to-back cruises).  Planning for something later in March or early April.

Dennis has been hitting the indoor bikes as well and starting to see some good results in the increased number of miles and riding time.  Hopefully, he and I can get outdoors for some real miles together in 2013.

I think about little Ben everyday and I hope and pray that we will all start to see his little leg start to kick and move here real soon.

He is such a happy little guy, to see his face makes me smile.

Ben has single-handedly brought an otherwise dreadful 2012 back up in the standings to first place.

I hope that Kathy's 2013 holds absolutely no unpleasant surprises, she's had enough for a lifetime and maybe even several lifetimes.

Bill & Cathy (and Ben) and Marie & Justin are all setup pretty well.  They have good jobs, nice homes, 2 dogs each, and each other.  They all make me proud and I give all the credit on great parenting to my Kathy.  She is our rock.

Merry Christmas and a Happy 2013 New Year, if we are still here on December 22...

Getting ready for 2013

Lately I've been just trying to get a few miles in here and there.  Most of them are indoors, so I really don't feel like they are good quality miles, just miles.

Jeff and Steve mentioned maybe starting the night weekday rides on the Douglas trail, at least until the snow gets too deep.  Haven't heard when and where, but that would be fun.

The Arizona trip with the Silver guys is shaping up.  Looks like we have the house rented for the last week in Febuary and Shad, Rob and I are planning on driving the trailer down with all the bikes and gear.  This will give us lots of options for day trips and some gravel road rides, as everyone is planning on bringing road bikes and CX bikes.  The house is different from last year, but in the same general locations as last year.  The pictures look great.

I plan on staying as active as possible with indoor and hopefully some outdoor miles, so the Arizona trip is a fun experience for my legs...

I must be getting old or something because when asked about things I want for Christmas from family, I have a difficult time thinking of anything I need (that includes bike stuff).  I know that sounds weird, there should always be something you need for your bike.  I guess I'm good with everything I have currently and nothing has worn out yet.

I do plan on getting in on the 2013 Silver clothing order, so there are few more things I can add to the closet.

I hope we have another winter like last year, no snow and above average temps...then I can ride.

Dr. Tim announced a Saturday ride from Dunn Brothers at 11:00.

Wasn't necessarily planning on riding, but changed my mind last minute.

I made it to the ride and along with Dr. Tim and 6 others we headed toward Byron.

From there we made our way to Mantorville via the golf course road.  That sure is a fun stretch.

Then we continued north to Pine Island again along some very nice roads.

We stopped at Kwik Trip in P.I., then we headed back to town on the Douglas Trail.

I finished with 65 miles and some tired legs.

Not bad for a late November ride...

Happy B-Day to Silver!

Saturday was the coffee ride to celebrate Steve's birthday.

The weather didn't cooperate as it drizzled all ride, but we still had about 12 or so riders and a fun time followed.

Unfortunately, when I left Rochester the sun was coming out and so I brought the good bike.

Needless to say, I spent a couple of hours cleaning and re-greasing when I got home.

Good time and good friends...

Dennis and I got out on the Douglas trail about mid-afternoon.

The temp was just under 50 degrees, but we had plenty of warm clothes.

We started haeding north with the idea we'd turn back whenever we felt like it, but before you knew it, we were in sight of Pine Island.  So, we made it to the Kwik Trip in Pine Island for a short break and then it was back to the trail for the return trip.

Before we hit Douglas, we passed Big Jim as he headed north on the CX trail.  I yelled, but he may not have heard me.

The last 5 miles were starting to get to us, but as we hit Douglas we found our second wind and finished strong.  I did a bit of the CX trail, while Dennis kept a nice pace going on the paved trail.

26 miles was pretty impressive for Dennis' first excursion.

We'll work on those base miles through the winter and be ready for next spring.

Jeff at Baycross race.

Lots of yard work and some fun times watching my grandson.

Now that I have some time to ride, the weather and the daylight are working against me.

Time to settle into dark rides or hit the indoor trainer (yuck)...

Had to break down and move indoors these last several days.

Cold and rainy don't sound like good times to me, so I hit the healthy living center here in Rochester for some indoor miles.

I've forgotten how much I sweat on a stationary trainer with little to no airflow around me.

I should pick up a nice battery powered fan, that I can clip to the bike.

Anyway, I started lifting some weights again...so everything hurts now.

Hopefully, there will be some nice fall days for outside stuff.

Lots of 1 hour rides.

There seems to be a number of things pulling me away from longer rides on the weekends and the weekdays are just too short for anything long (unless I skip out of work early).

I am getting a number of back-to-back days in, so that is positive.

Hopefully, there will be a few more nice weekend days for some longer days.

I made the drive up to the Fall Silver Coffee ride.

They started from Life Wellness Center (one of the team sponsers) and they had a new Subaru there from another one of our sponsers.  Then we took a couple of group photos and we were off.

We had about 30 or so and the plan was to wind our way south out of town.

We followed hwy 35 for awhile, the roads were very quiet and it was a nice relaxed pace as everyone was busy chatting and switching places to chat with someone new.  I had the opportunity to chat with several new folks, as well as some old friends.

At one point, we were on the Black Dog Time Trial course.

When we turned north and started heading for Farmington, Pat noticed that Bob was way off the back.  So, Steve, Dan, Pat, and myself turned around and back-tracked until we found Bob.  He had gotten a flat and didn't let anyone know that he had to stop.

Anyway, the five of us pedaled on to the Dunn Brothers Coffee Shop in Farmington, were Silver Cycling had put on a terrific spread of fresh-roasted coffee, apple and cherry fritters, some other assorted cakes, and bananas.

After a nice break, a group of riders headed back because they wanted to get back earlier.  I waited for the last group to head out for the last 10 miles back to Lakeville.

As always, a great time with great friends.

Mostly short 1 hour rides lately.

I guess it is my "off season", that is if I ever had an "on season".

I plan on trying to maintain some level of fitness though the winter, much like I tried last winter.
However, I don't expect such a mild winter.  I got lots of outdoor miles last January and February.

Who knows, maybe there will be more of that this year...I doubt it though.

We had a good group at the start of the Saturday ride.

The SW winds were starting to pick up, so we headed south out of town on cty 1.

The group decided to turn west and south to Racine.  Tim B. had to get back to town, so he turned and headed back on cty 1 (I think).

We grabbed some water at the park in Racine, then continued west.

The group turned at cty 8 and headed north, while I decided to add some more miles into the wind.

I continued west and south until I got near Dexter.  There I finally got to turn north and with a nice tailwind, I was sailing along nicely.

I continued north on cty 10, until it turned east toward High Forest.  I stayed east all the way to Stewartville.

I grabbed some water and a chocolate milk at the Casey's store, then it was east and north all the way home.

I finished with 75 miles and I felt really good all day.

Another 200 mile day in the bank.

Dennis and I got up at 3:45am on Saturday for the drive up to Lakeville.

We arrived with plenty of time (could have gotten another 15 minutes of sleep, dang).
We loaded the suburban with several coolers and lots of duffle bags.

We had about 18 to start, so after a quick (dark) pitcture, we headed out.

By the time we got out of Lakeville, the sun was just starting to peek over the horizon.

We rolled along nicely all the way to Northfield.  Here we picked up a bunch (30+) riders while at the same time a couple of the early starters headed back to Lakeville.  They were not planning on riding the whole day anyway.

Things got a bit confusing for Dennis, as it was hard for him to figure out who was riding 200 and who was just tagging along for awhile.  And as the group split up, he got behind several slower riders and lost contact with the D to D group for a few minutes.

But as the Northfield group turned off, Dennis caught back up with us on Cty 1 heading for Pine Island.

We stopped in Pine Island, got some water and food (either from the coolers or from Kwik Trip), then headed for Mazzepa.  Another quick stop at Chefy's, but he wasn't home so we didn't hang out there.

Then on to Zumbro Falls and north, east, and north to Lake City.  Where we stopped again at the lookout spot near the marina.  After another refuel, we headed down 61 to Wabasha.  We had a nice pace going and the group stayed right together the whole way.

Steve had to break off at Lake City, but he would catch us again in Cannon Falls.

Lars also left the group at Lake City as his back was giving him some trouble.
Dennis offered up the passenger seat, but Lars had already called for someone to pick him up.

At Wabasha, Ted's in-laws had a terrific picnic lunch setup for us, with sloppy joes, chips, pickles, watermelon, honey-dew, grapes, cookies, and rice krispy bars.  Yummy!
Always a fantastic meal.  Many, many thanks to Sandy and Lynn for their gratious efforts.

Quite a few guys brought a kit change and swapped out the morning kit for a fresh one at Wabasha.  Next year, I'm doing that as well (if we have a SAG).  That was a smart thing to do for such a long day in the saddle.

Anyway, across the Mississippi to Nelson and then north on 35 (i think) to Pepin, Stockton, Maiden Rock, and Bay City.

With 120 miles or more in our legs, everyone felt the 1.8 mile hill just before Bay City.  The group split a bit, but I felt pretty good.  Here is where you need to not get too fired up, because it is still a long way to Lakeville and you don't want to burn all your matches.  So I settled into a nice pace and made my way to the top.

On the way down, I ended up catching up to Mike, but I couldn't see Edger and one other rider who had crested the hill ahead of me.

We stopped again in Bay City and regrouped and recharged, then it was across the bridge into Red Wing.

One more water stop before we hit the Cannon Valley Trail to Cannon Falls.  Dennis went on ahead to meet us in Cannon Falls.

The trail was the long steady 21+ mph deathmarch it has been famous for, but we all arrived in Cannon Falls together.

Refuel and water, while some took advantage of the great chicken at the grocery store.

Then we were off for the final 30 miles, back to Randolph, and then on into Lakeville.

We arrived back in Lakeville with about 10 minutes of sunlight left.

I felt good all day and had plenty of energy as we rolled home.
What a great day, with great friends!!!

A BIG THANKS to Dennis for the all day support, it would not have been near as much fun without having him along.

Here are Ted's pics: http://www.silvercycling.org/slide_shows/DtoD_16/index.html

Go BIG or go home.

Dawn to Dusk 16 is tomorrow and I am really excitied about spending the day with great friends and great riders.

Sounds like we have a big group, around 17 or so.  The record is 19, so we're close.
You never know if anyone will be a last-minute dropout or addition.  We'll see tomorrow at 6:00am.

Dennis has gratiously offered to be our SAG driver, so we are both heading out of town around 4:00am to get to Lakeville with plenty of time to get things packed in the Suburban.

The weather sounds great, mid 80s for temp and winds from the ESE around 8 mph.

I think I'm physically ready (even though I don't have a record number of miles on).

For those who don't know D to D, it is a one day, 200 mile bicycle ride.
We start in Lakeville, then hit the following towns: Northfield, Pine Island, Mazeppa, Lake City, Wabasha, Nelson, Stockton, Maiden Rock, Bay City, Red Wing, Cannon Falls, Farmington, and back to Lakeville.

Having a SAG vehicle will be a big help with this many guys.
Thanks Dennis, for hanging out with us all day.

I hope I can get some sleep tonight...

Finally, some good news.

Lil Ben started to wiggle his toes on his right side the other day!!!

So, either the treatment is working or he is starting to fight off the virus on his own.

With no other symptoms they let Bill and Cathy take Ben home yesterday.

He is such a good boy, the staff at St. Mary's were sad to see him go, but sleeping in his own bed will definately be better than the hospital (for Ben, Mom, and Dad).

They (the Doctors) never did determine what virus it was, they threw out names like polio, polio-like, West Nile, and others of that nature.  But the tests they ran didn't indicate any of them.  CDC was involved right away and did some follow up with their daycare.  There is one test that takes several weeks to determine the answer for West Nile that they are waiting on, but either way Ben seems to be on the upswing.

While in the hospital, they gave him 5 treatments of IVIG (intervenious immune globulin), which is basically the antibodies of thousands of heathly people all mixed together and given to people with low immune systems, on a side note, the Research lab where I used to work was involved in a study where they were giving the same treatment (IVIG) to people with early symptoms of Alzheimers Disease.

Anyway, there is much more hope and several Doctors even told Bill and Cathy that "there is no reason he (Ben) will not make a complete recovery", so we continue to keep the little guy in our thoughts and prayers.

I think about Ben and Kathy so much, that is hard to really care about much else...

Pile it on...

With everything that is going on, I don't think we need any more...

But the other day, Bill and Cathy noticed that Lil Ben wasn't putting his weight on his right leg or kicking it like he normally did.

They took him into the doctor and they immediately transferred him to Mayo Rochester.

So Bill, Cathy, and Ben are at St. Mary's hospital here in Rochester undergoing a number of tests.

They have ruled out blood clots and there is nothing broken, so now they are planning an MRI and to run some tests on some spinal fluid.

They have mentioned a virus, but have not gotten very specific about any one thing.

Poor little guy, he doesn't deserve any of this (nor does his parents).

Ben came over and stayed Friday night, as his mom and dad went out for supper and a concert for their anniversary.

My mom (Great Grandma) and Aunt Marie came over and helped watch the little guy.

He was very hungry and went through most of the milk, so we had to thaw some of the frozen milk.

He played and fussed, until about 7:30 or so, then it was jammy time and one last bottle.  Aunt Marie had the magic touch, and soon it was all quiet.

He slept until about 11:00, then another bottle and it was lights out.

Bill and Cathy got home around midnight, so Mommy had everything taken care of from then on.

What a great little grandson!!!

Been awhile.

What can I say, it has been a busy couple of weeks.

With Kathy's surgery, then the recovery time, and then there is the drain care.  So riding has been whenever I can get out.  Mostly short rides late in the day.

But today, I did get to Chatfield.  Unfortunately, they were having their summer celebration, so the town was packed.  I was glad to get through without any problems.

Kathy had 2 of the 5 drain tubes removed last Wednesday, but the others will have to be next week.
It will great to be done with all of this...

D to D is fast approaching, so I hope I will be ready.

102 miles of up and downs (figuratively and literally).

Terry and JP mapped out a nice ride to the SE through Preston, Lansboro, and Eyota.

Lot's of hills and the temps started to ramp up as we were heading home.

We had a big group with 14 starting out and then a few turned off, as they needed to get back earlier.

The ride to Preston was fast and we even got a very nice paceline going.

We stopped in Preston for some water and food, then we headed to Lansboro.
After a quick stop in Lansboro we headed north and west.

This was a really long stretch without a stop, but we had a nice big group to share the load.
And we stayed all together to Eyota.

After a much needed water stop in Eyota, I felt much better for the last 10 miles back to Rochester.
The group split up as most headed back via the Gun Club Road, while Jeff, Steve, and I headed back on Cty 9.

Spending time with a future TDF winner...

Dennis and I took the drive up to the FarmDog TT to see the Silver guys, but more importantly, to pick up my new set of HED wheels.

I can't wait to try them out.  They are way cool (according to Hwood)...

Oh, and I got int a nice 92 miles last Saturday with the VeloRochester group as we headed to Lake City and back.

Then another 42 on Sunday for a nice long cool down.

Since then I have been mostly at Kathy's clinic appointments, working remotely, eating, and sleeping.

I guess I did get one 35 mile ride in the other day.

The new wheels will give me more incentive to get my lazy butt out there.

D to D is coming fast...

Dan Ulwelling Memorial Race, Freedom  Fest (SpamJam) Austin, MN...

25 miles of fast, flat racing.  Ussually the wind is the biggest factor, but today there was virtually no wind to speak of.  There was a slight breeze from the ESE, so the last two stretches were the ones that I tried to stay alert to my position in the group.
As usual, the Silver boys showed up.  We had Steve, Rob, Shad, Jay, Carlton, Chuck, and myself.

From the start, Silver was up near the front keeping the pace high.

It wasn't long before Al (from Rochester) took off the front and Hwood went with him.  Silver settled in to a more comfortable pace as a few others riders moved to the front to try and chase.  But all of those efforts were short lived, as Hwood and Al gained ground on the rest of us.

As we turned east (and into the slight breeze), two riders launched off the front.  Silver picked the pace up, but the two chasers got a nice gap on the rest of us.  But they did remain in sight, so there was really no panic in the group.

We turned south and the pace stayed nice and high (right around 24-25 mph).  Along the way the main group was getting smaller as more and more riders moved to the back and soon lost contact.

We were down to around 20 or so, when disaster struck.

I was middle of the pack riding the right edge of the road, when two riders up ahead made contact.
The rider to their immediate left overreacted and lunged to the left, coming in contact with another rider.  They went down taking two more riders to my immediate left.

I threaded the needle between the pile on the left and the two rider who had made initial contact.  They had both headed for the ditch mostly, so I was really only watching the bikes to make sure they didn't bounce into my path.

As I cleared the mess, I looked back to see a number of others involved in the crash.  I'm guessing at least 10 people were on the ground.

I didn't see who actually went down, so I continued on to catch the front end of the group.

I did a quick head count of Silver and I think we were two short.  Just then Shad came up from behind, he had gone way left and around the mess.  So we were still one done.

We were only about 5 miles from the finish, so the rest of us pedalled toward the finish.  Though you could really tell the group had lost its desire to race, as the pace was under 20 mph.

We turned south onto the final home stretch and the pace picked up again as everyone dug deep to finish the race strong.  Carlton made a great effort up the left side, I stayed tucked in on the right and as the pace got back up to 28 mph, the legs started to fail (some worse than others).  I went around several riders as they ran out of gas and I found myself back from a group of 5 or 6 (about 10 yards).
I tried to bridge, but by now my legs were feeling it.  Just then I noticed someone on my right trying to nip me at the line, so I dug deep and pulled away from him to finish just behind the small group.

After a quick cool down, I met up with my brother Dennis and we went back into the parking lot.  There we learned the Steve had been involved in the crash.  In a few minutes, here came Steve on his bike.  You could tell he had gone down, by the scuffs on his jersey.  We helped him get the jersy off and sure enough there was road rash on his back, elbow, and hip.  The bike brake levers were twisted, but otherwise the bike looked ok.  We got come antiseptic wipes and helped Steve clean off some of the scrapes.

I'm sure he is feeling it today.  Heal fast there Big Steve, I'm thinking about you.  If I had known it was Steve, I would have stopped.

Anyway, Hwood got second overall as one of the secondary chasers bridged to them and then kept right on going to a nice solo finish.  Hwood took the sprint over Al for second.

Dennis and I didn't stick around for the awards, but I'm sure Silver Cycling was well represented.

A fun, fast race as usual, but the inconsistancy, inexperience of the riders and their pack skills make it a very sketchy ride.

I was lucky, I'm sure there are a number of people who are not feeling too well today...

Dr. Tim sent out an email for a nice civilized ride on Saturday, so I responded with "I'm in".

I copied Jeff and Steve just in case they were around.
To my surprise they both showed up, along with Dr. Tim, Tim B., Al, Ian, and Franz.

We rolled SSE, out on Cty 1, through Simpson and continued south to Cty 2.
From there we headed west to Racine and after a few more westerly miles, we turned north on Cty 8.
Then we continued north through High Forest and then back into Rochester on Cty 8.

What a great ride!!!  Very civilized, nice pace, and a real fun group of riders.

It was great to see the familiar faces again.
Just like old times.

The Silver guys had a ride starting from Cannon Falls for Saturday.

So, I packed up the bike and made the trek up there.

We left Cannon Falls at 9:00am or so, heading for Red Wing.

The back roads were hilly, but almost no traffic made for some very nice riding.

We stopped in Red Wing for some water, food, and rest.  Then we continued SE to Lake City via the back roads.
Again the roads were perfect and very quiet, but now the temps and wind were starting to pick up.
After another quick stop for water, we headed NW toward Old Frontenac.
Another beautiful road with hardly no cars.  Then we headed across 61 and back to the backroads for Red Wing.

We stopped at a nice sandwich shop in Red Wing for some great food, cool temps, and much needed rest for the legs.

I could really feel it in my legs as we headed out, but I figured I would "warm up" again.

Then it was back to Cannon Falls following our original backroad for a ways, then we jogged over to the trail for the shade and wind block.

Unfortunately, my legs never did really come back to life and I really felt it all the way back to Cannon Falls.

105 miles with almost 4000 feet of climbing on a hot (+90) and windy (+15mph) day.
Only one flat (sorry Rob) and a great, perfect day spent with terrific friends.

What's been happening...

Kathy had a bit of a break from treatments, so we hopped in the car and spent a few days in Chicago.

From there, we headed up the west coast of Michigan to Mackinaw City.

We spent three days in Mackinaw City, one day on the island and the other days spent wandering around.

Mackinaw Island was fun, we walked through a lot of the shops, visited the old Catholic Church, and took a horse-drawn buggy ride.

Then we headed back across the U.P. for home.

Now, we are back to the clinic for the rest of the treatments.

I have been getting in a few shorter bike rides in lately, but I am starting to fall a bit behind on the miles...
Hopefully, I can get a few longer rides in.

I made the drive up on Saturday to help at the first of the 2012 Farm Dog TTs.

I was the usual "holder/whip" person along with Jason.

They had over 70 people, with about 30 of them doing the route a second time.

Beautiful weather, warm, sunny, and lighter winds.

The only concern was several gravel trucks hauling along the route.  Silver got up close and personal with one.

Anyway, I've been getting in some riding but mostly shorter, solo rides.

Maybe the weekends will clear up a bit so I can make a few of the group rides.  Either that or I'll have to try to make some evening rides on the weekdays.

It was a great night to get out for a ride.

So I took advantage of it and made my way to Chatfield and back.

The wind was out of the SSE, so the first half was a bit harder, but the last half was less work (especially the northward sections).

Nothing out of the usual to report this time, no bee stings, no empty (or full) beer cans...

Only spotted on other rider near Simpson (heading south).

My legs were plenty tired as I neared home.

A nice afternoon for a ride with light east winds and sunny skies.

This ride however had a number of surprises...

First, I was buzzed by several high schoolers, who thought it would be fun to harass someone on their way home.

Then, I got a nice bee sting on the inner thigh.

And finally, I had a an empty beer can tossed at me by some member of a yard service crew.

At the very least, he could have tossed a full one...

Riding has been a bit scarce lately.

Just seems to be a lot of "honey do" items and other things that get in the way.

Unfortunately, I had to miss the Silver Coffee Ride.
Bummer.
It would have been good to get up there and see those guys.

Hopefully, I can get back into some sort of regular schedule here shortly.

I did get out for a 35 mile ride yesterday.
But I felt terrible...too few and too far in between, I guess.

Got out for a 35 mile route last night.

Nice steady NNW winds pushed me to Dover, but then I had to work against it all the way home.

Temps were just a bit on the cool side, so long sleeves and knee warmers kept me nice a toasty.

Overall, I felt pretty good.

Not much riding going lately.

We made a couple of trips over to see Ben. What a great kid. At least when I'm around.

With Kathy's chemo there is always something going on.

I did get out and do some much needed lawn work this past weekend. And after that I got in a 35 mile ride to Dover and back. My legs felt heavy, but that is expected when you've been off the bike for 5 days or so.

Seemed like the days that would work to ride, were the days it was either raining, looking like rain, or 30+ mph winds.

I know, I'm a wimp...

I made my way down to the group ride at Dunn Brothers South.

We had 9 total for a windy ride.

The plan was to head SW into the ~25mph winds and then get a nice tailwind push all the way home.

The group chugged along nicely, but after about an hour or so I was starting to feel it. And with the strong winds there was no place to hide.

I dropped off the back a couple of times and the others slowed and came back for me (thanks), but by the turnaround point I was plenty tired.

So, I said "goodbye" and turned toward Stewartville on my own.

After some nice easy "slower" miles, I started to feel better and I made my way home without too much trouble.

Thanks to the nice tailwind.

Just got back from the Arizona trip with the Silver guys.

3 full days and 2 half days of 80 degrees, light to no wind, plenty of long steady hills, and good times.

The fun started early as the alarm failed to go off at the 3:15am preset time. Luckily, I happended to wake at 3:35am and glanced at the clock to realize I was off to a late start. But I still managed to get to Rob's at 4:50am (so not too late).

We flew out early (6:50am) on Wednesday. We were all on the same plane going out and coming back, so departure times and gates were all the same for everyone. Got down there around 10:00 am local time, picked up the rental van and made our way to the house.

All of our bikes were delivered to the house, except for Pat's because he shipped it a bit later. We got a call from Jim, so we then had to run and get Pat's bike at the house rental office. We then stopped for a quick lunch and to grab a few groceries.

Then we hurried to get out for the first ride in short sleeves.

We headed for an out and back route and then roamed around the neighborhood for awhile. About 45 miles.

Thursday was a full day of riding, to a nice quiet National Park area, then on to Fountain Hills and back past the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale location. About 75 miles.

Friday was hill workout day, as we headed for Bartlett Lake Recreation Area. About 20 miles one way to the lake. Great climbing and descents, but mostly descents on the way to the lake. Then climbing back out is where the fun starts. Several 4 to 5 mile steady uphills with a few areas kicking up to make it interesting. Several of us (foolishly) decided to do it twice. Right around 85 miles with over 8000 ft. of vertical climbing for the day.

Saturday was a bit more relaxed as we followed Dan all over the place. I'm not sure which direction we were heading, but eventually the roads started to turn to gravel on us, so we did several out and backs until we finally ended up back at the house. Some climbing, but no leg-breakers. Chaulk up another 75 miles or so.

For Sunday, we got in another half day (an out and back and some neighborhood roaming, a couple of short, steep climbs mixed in to make it fun), then we packed the bikes, headed for Fedex, and then back to the airport for the flight home.

We landed at MSP around 11:30pm and from there we went back to Rob's, where I had parked the car. I got back to Rochester around 1:30am.

A great time, great friends, great weather, and great riding.

I'll try to post some pictures here shortly.

Bike's away...

Well, "Pearl" is on her way to Arizona.

Scheduled to arrive on Tuesday the 21st.

I hope I packed everything correctly.

It begins...

Kathy started her chemo today.

They spent the first hour mostly talking about side-effects and which additional medications are for what side-effect.

Then after several pre-medication infusions, they atarted the real chemo.

Kathy has 12 weeks of this treatment, then this is followed up with an additional 8 weeks of the tough-stuff.

Our life is going to change, that's for sure...

Getting ready for Arizona

With only a few weeks from the Arizona trip, I'm trying to put on the base miles.

Most of these are indoors, but I have snuck out for a few outdoor rides.

Last Saturday, Jeff and I did about 36 miles starting from his place.

We headed to Oronoco, then north past the Ponderosa, then we had to walk our bikes past the bridge construction, then up the big hill to Chef's, and then finally south and west back to Oronoco and back on in to Jeff's.

The temps were in the upper 30s to low 40s, so I was plenty warm.

I wish the legs, lungs, heart, and rear-end would start to cooperate...

Reality Check, Big Time!

All else pales in comparison to the news my wife recently received.

Kathy was diagnosed with breast cancer.

We have a great Doctor, who has really taken her care on fulltime and has made some wonderful changes.

Kathy has gotten most of the preliminary tests out of the way. The PET scan shows that the cancer has not spread and is still very localized.

Kathy decided to participate in a clinical study about cancer treatment and as part of that study, they took a biopsy and sent it to California for classification. Then the chemotherapy starts after that.

After ~6 months of chemo, then they are talking surgery, followed by radiation therapy, and lastly hormone therapy for about 5 years or so.

Anyway, they are very hopeful it has been caught in time and they are very postitive that Kathy will beat this.

I have created a link to her blog site at the top of my page. Thanks for all who have visited it already and given her the positive reinforcement she deserves.

On a side note, it is great to have family around to help with things and I'm sure we'll lean on them more in the coming months.

As of now, I am still planning on doing the Arizona bike trip with the Silver Boys (with Kathy's blessing of course or you could say Kathy's permission).

Life sure can change in an instant...

Middle of January

I'm riding mostly indoors during the week, mainly because of the darkness and I'm not a big fan of riding on the roads at night (even with proper lighting).

But, I did get in a nice (but windy) 20 miles outdoors on Sunday.

The roads were mostly dry, except for some shaded areas. Those areas were wet going out and were just starting to ice up as I rode back home.

Good thing for studded tires. :)

Is this real life?

40 degrees in early January???

Well, I had to take advantage of that.

So on Saturday, I met Dr. Tim, Beebe, and 3 others for a nice 45 mile ride to Byron, Genoa, Douglas, and then back to Rochester.

Then on Sunday, I made my way to Simpson, Pleasant Grove, Chatfield, Dover, and Eyota, all by my lonesome. Tack on another 51 miles.

The winds picked up as I neared home. But Hey, I was outside riding on the road in January.

2012!!!

Beautiful weather, but I'm not too thrilled about riding the roads at night with lights.

So, mostly indoors this year (so far).

But I plan on getting out for some outdoor miles on the weekend. Mid to upper 30s is pretty good for January.

Continued dark throughout most of the evening,
with some widely-scattered light towards morning."
